  • Wesley Matsell launches new label with Nathan Fake

Nathan Fake and Wesley Matsell are both producers best known for their releases on Border Community – Nathan Fake has been putting out psychedelic permutations on dance music since 2003 for the label, while Matsell recently released the blissful Total Order Of Being EP for them earlier in 2014. Cambria Instruments is a new label venture from the pair, and for the first release they have teamed up for a split 12″ of kaleidoscopic electronic sounds.

Nathan Fake’s contribution ‘Black Drift’ starts things off, an initially inauspicious tripping beat gathering momentum and morphing into a far-out piece of fuzzy house underpinned by sunken low-end rumbles. It’s the kind of brilliantly wide-eyed track we have come to expect from the producer. Over on the flip, Wesley Matsell’s ‘Bismuth’ is a darker affair, a tight techno rhythm holding things together while synths spin wildly. A highly expressive, lysergic trip and one of his finest productions to date. All in all, you couldn’t hope for a stronger start from a new label.

You can preview the tracks and pre-order the release via Bleep.

  • Luke Abbott mixes RA podcast

Luke Abbott likes mistakes. They give his music the additional depth of a human touch. He’s the type of artist who allows his drums to drift out of time. His notes are sometimes off, and you can often hear the hiss of tape noise in his tracks. Abbott once found the MIDI controllers he was using unsatisfactory, so he built his own. (He’s also fond of assembling synthesizers.) At the heart of his music is a modular system—Abbott values its versatility and unpredictability. On two albums and a handful of EPs, Abbott has brought all of this to bear, creating a catalogue of rich and unconventionally pretty music that’s best described as modern kosmische. It’s a sound him and James Holden, whose Border Community label has released both of Abbott’s albums, specialise in. Abbott’s latest album, Wysing Forest, which was released in June, was written during a musician-in-residence programme he completed at the Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridgeshire. The record is mostly based on live recordings and improvisation, an approach that yielded nine deliciously freeform tracks that rank among his most unique and personal work.

Abbott has never been a DJ, but that hasn’t stopped him creating a strikingly beautiful podcast for Resident Advisor, blending his influences with some of his like-minded contemporaries.

You can listen to the podcast and read his brief interview with RA here.

  • Rival Consoles joins LittleBig, preps EP for Erased Tapes

LittleBig are pleased to welcome Rival Consoles to the roster.

The London producer will release a new EP called ‘Sonne’ via Erased Tapes on September 15th.

The new release follows last year’s ‘Odyssey’ EP, and represents hit attempt to imbue his music with “colour.” He explained to RA recently “There are lots of instances of very colourful ambient sounds, which I took great care to create for each song, using various methods, from passing analogue synths through chains of effects to chopping up random sequences of recordings and forming tiny collages.”

Originally signed to the label after sending an unsolicited demo, West has found a home for his analog-focused music on Erased Tapes. His music as Rival Consoles has progressed from its IDM roots to approach the slow-building, atmospheric heft of the imprint’s orchestral ambient act, Winged Victory For The Sullen.

West will debut a new live set at a yet-to-be-announced London release show, and is also scheduled to play Seattle’s Decibel festival. Check out Sonne’s second track, the minimalist ‘3 Chords,’ below.

  • Rob Clouth Joins LittleBig; Listen To His Electronic Explorations Mix

    Rob Clouth

We’re happy to announce that stunning live act and sound designer extraordinaire Rob Clouth has joined LittleBig.

With previous releases on Traum Schallplatten and Detroit Underground as well as the recent Clockwork Atom EP on Leisure System, Rob connects the dots between glitchy IDM and artful techno, somewhere between the beautiful melodies of Jon Hopkins and the high-intensity beats of Autechre. In addition to productions under his own name, Rob previously worked under the name Vaetxh and has created multiple pieces of experimental hardware and software, as well as designing all of his own visuals.

Rob is currently working on another release for Leisure System to be released later this year. He will play live on the Leisure System stage at this year’s Dimensions Festival alongside Special Request, DJ Stingray, and Funkinevin.

  • Chambray joins LittleBig, drops EP on Ultramajic

LittleBig are pleased to announce the addition of new Ultramajic artist Chambray to our roster.

In only a short period of time, Ultramajic has proved itself to be a reliable source of modern house and techno with a unique overarching aesthetic that makes it stand out like a neon beacon in the endless sea of dance labels operating today.

This release – the label’s ninth – marks an important step in its history: the premiere of a totally new, formerly unknown artist who goes by the name of Chambray. It only takes a few seconds of listening to any of the four tracks presented here to see why he’s been initiated into the Ultramajic stable – he turns out some uproarious, vintage-touched house with considerable bass heft that would do Chicago-style veterans like Steve Poindexter proud while showing off more modern house styles that have become touchstones of Ultramajic-affiliated DJs and producers like Aden and Jimmy Edgar himself. To simplify: put these on in a club, watch it go boom.

Ultramajic continues to blaze its own distinct path through the world of electronic music in 2014, and here Chambray has proved himself to be a valuable recruit – capable of churning out total burners that have a classic vibe to them with a modern bite and ruggedness.

Chambray is now taking DJ bookings, contact chris@littlebig.org.uk

  • Luke Abbott – Clash Mix

Stressful week? Us too, so forget it all and drift away into another – far more pleasant – world entirely, via Luke Abbott’s psychedelic, sedated Clash mix.

A long-established part of the family at Border Community – James Holden’s experimental electro label – synth-obsessive Luke Abbott has been quietly releasing various slices of lo-fi electronic gold over the years. After colourful, woozy 2010 debut album ‘Holkham Drones’ introduced us to his analogue ways, Abbott is back with his second album. Titled ‘Wysing Forest’ – named after the arts centre in Cambridgeshire where the album was recorded and where Abbott became the first musician-in-residence – it’s a heady, otherworldly affair that mixes soundscaping with electro-acoustic production, showcasing the producer’s capacity for crafting vast, engulfing electronic tapestries.

All pieced together with a rare sense of exactness and detail, this is a fascinating catch up.

  • Resident Advisor Mix of the Day: Tim Exile

“This was recorded at a show I did at a festival called Riddim Collision in Lyon in September 2013. As always in the last few years it was completely improvised using the instrument I developed myself which I’ve been playing since 2008. It’s a studio-in-a-box centred around a looper, tied together with some workflow magic allowing me to wander freely: Making, looping, processing, resampling, chopping and so on. All the audio happens on the laptop inside the ensemble running in Reaktor… no analog modular I’m afraid… and it’s controlled by a flightcase full of MIDI controllers.” – Tim Exile

  • Jimmy Edgar update – hi profile rmxs, Frankie Knuckles tribute + world tour

vitali gelwich photography berlin jimmy edgar dj press 2

Edgar began the intense flow of hi-grade club weaponry in 2013 with his club smashing EPs (Hot Inside & Mercurio). The spice continues to flow in 2014 by way of high profile remixes that have made their way into some of the record boxes of the world’s biggest DJ’s. After dropping a solid mix for RA early this year, Jimmy will be playing big stages & the coolest clubs worldwide through ’14.

Here’s a recap on recent activity:

Claude Vonstroke enlisted Jimmy to remix his ‘Lay It Down’ track, out on Dirtybird in May:

Jimmy pays tribute to the late Frankie Knuckles.
Edgar had been playing Frankie Knuckles “Baby Wants to Ride” (Jimmy Edgar Edit) out up until the time of Frankie’s passing. He wanted to share it as a tribute to the legend as Frankie was one of the reasons that Jimmy started his career.

Jimmy Edgar reflected on his growing Ultramajic discography by remixing ADEN’s ‘Whip’, a standout track from Edgar’s label, which reached no.1 on Beatport’s Electronica labels.
