Adrian Utley

Belligerent in his exploration of sound, Adrian Utley's distinctive sonic palette has been part of our musical lexicon for over four decades. Best known as a founding member of Portishead, his influence reaches far beyond the band's singular catalogue, spanning experimental music, jazz, electronics, contemporary classical composition, film and sound art.

A guitarist, composer, producer and relentless sonic explorer, Utley has spent a lifetime dissolving the boundaries between genres. His work is defined less by style than by curiosity: analogue experimentation sits comfortably alongside improvisation, orchestral writing, cinematic composition and deeply textural songwriting. Whether collaborating with Jeff Beck, Fred Frith, Marianne Faithfull, Aphex Twin, Sparklehorse or Perfume Genius, his unmistakable musical language has become one of the most quietly influential voices in modern British music.

Away from Portishead, Utley's career has unfolded as a continual process of exploration. From large-scale Guitar Orchestra performances and reinterpretations of Terry Riley's In C to silent film scores and site-specific commissions, his work consistently embraces risk, atmosphere and the unexpected. Equally fascinated by vintage electronics, obscure instruments, field recordings and the physicality of sound itself, he approaches music-making with the instincts of both an artist and an inventor.

In Spring 2027, Utley joins acclaimed American guitarist and composer Marc Ribot for a rare series of performances across the UK and Ireland, taking place in an extraordinarily special collection of hand-picked venues. Combining expansive, improvised live music with cinematic projections of experimental short films, the duo will present immersive audiovisual performances that blur the line between concert, installation and film – an intimate opportunity to experience two singular artists in dialogue, creating something unique each night.
